Trance in a nutshell

1. What is Trance?

Trance is a natural and normal state that we all enter into several times a day, every day of our lives. Daydreaming is a common example of the trance state, in its natural form, to which we can all relate. When we enter trance we are merely in a focused state of mind. Our attention may be focused inwardly on our thoughts or feelings, which is usually accompanied by self-talk, (that voice in our heads). Or alternatively, our attention can be outward with the focus being a book, a TV programme, a film or a task at hand which has captured and held our attention. Whether inward or outward, our focus of attention is narrow enough, and sufficiently intense, that we are able to block out everything around us and concentrate solely on whatever has held our attention. However, should a door-bell chime or a telephone ring, we are perfectly capable of pulling ourselves out of this focused state even if the intrusion is unwanted!

The trance state is used in a therapeutic setting by hypnotherapists because lasting results can be achieved in this state during a short period of time. This is because the rational, or ‘conscious’ mind, which is usually addressed during talking therapies, is bypassed, in favour of communicating directly with the sub-conscious mind.
